What is Landscape Architecture? Landscape architecture is “An environmental design profession and discipline encompassing the analysis, planning, design, management, and stewardship of natural and built environments.” (College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, 2018)

Since the creation of our design studio in 2019, landscape and architecture have become completely interwoven into one discipline, merging elements of landscape architecture into all of our own design projects, with art serving as the vessel to express the depth and feeling of each designed space and communicate the intention out into the world.

Part of our ongoing research portfolio explores how the essence of landscape and nature can be echoed into the architectural experience, dissolving the boundary between us and the natural world through the design of spaces we inhabit. This concept is rooted in research into ancient practices of philosophy and art, in particular the Japanese sumi-e style of painting, art which captures the essence and spirit of the subject (nature) rather than an attempt to imitate realistic forms of landscape. This is the philosophy we embody within elements we design, to bring us all closer to nature and the universe as part of the experience of space.

Our portfolio includes a range of projects including; landscape architecture and design interventions, pavilion design, site and spatial analysis of existing and proposed urban infrastructure/natural landscapes, site planning, urban master planning and design, parks and recreation, land development, ecological research as well as a range of drawing and documentation services for architects and developers.

In 2021 we were awarded a small grant through the BCP Green Space programme to develop an idea for the restoration of an unused brownfield site within Poole.

The project aimed to create a community wellness garden, a space for nature, giving valuable habitat space back to the local ecology networks and improving existing green corridors and wildlife populations as part of the design whilst offering local people a space to feel more deeply connected with Nature.

Working on the periphery of a SSSI, the approach required delicate work, with thorough site analysis and consultation with surveyors and ecologists to ensure protection for the existing landscape. Many years of overdevelopment and tension between urban and natural landscapes in this area have left the local ecosystems damaged and divided, so this project aimed to begin a process of healing the landscape and restoring for future generations of people and wildlife to enjoy.

This project is still in development and we are now working closely with the local community and small businesses to bring this intervention to life, with site work expected to commence in 2027.

As part of our ongoing research through design practice, we are exploring the theme of coalescence and harmony between urban and natural landscapes, and how we can heal existing tension through carefully designed urban interventions. The interventions blur the boundary between architecture and landscape, allowing you to feel deeply connected to nature through the experience of space. Reclaimed and sustainable materials are at the cornerstone of these interventions, allowing new life to breathe back into spaces that have been damaged or forgotten.

A glimpse of this work can be seen in this early concept sketch, with architectural elements appearing to dissolve into the landscape. More on this project to follow.
